The Flow · Seed · Wandering Cloud

The Flow · Seed · Wandering Cloud series is woven on a four-shaft loom in double weave, using wild hand-spun hemp. The natural irregularity and tension of the fiber create organic textures and rhythmic surfaces.

I explore basketry through loom-based weaving: the warp is arranged in bundles, while the weft also uses bundled hemp threads, with the number of picks shifting to suggest flow and rhythm. After weaving, each piece is turned inside out to form a seamless edge, allowing the hemp to spill naturally from the vessel’s opening.

This approach is inspired by Kathe Todd-Hooker’s shaped tapestry. I apply “shaping as I weave” to define vessel forms, most clearly in Seed. In Flow, side dart scaffolds generate ridge-like mountain patterns. In Wandering Cloud, the focus is on varying picks in the weft to produce surface effects reminiscent of basketry.

These innovations extend weaving beyond convention, bridging loom practice with the tactile languages of tapestry and basketry.
